Old Town New Queens - Britannia Mine Museum
After covering the Gala Night and the new Summer Exhibit opening, I was asked to cover the pride event called Old Town, New Queens. It was hosted for the second consecutive year into the historical Mill.
What a challenge! To put things into perspective, the event was hosted inside the old copper concentrator (check the Gala Night section of my portfolio for more information about it) and the way this building was designed was to use minimal artificial light and try to bring as much as sun light as possible through thousand small windows all around the mill. The idea was great for the sake of efficiency and reduced utility bills, but for photography? It is interesting to say the least! Many areas are very dark and when you get a good input of external light, guess what? The sun light comes with the cost of many shades of window frames everywhere!
It was not easy, but I’m happy because this event forced me to be creative. Instead of battling against the light, I decided to take advantage of this unique situation and use the artificial light to enhance the silhouettes of the performers and create some unique photos.
